Monday 9 January

We set off to Sandown on Saturday in hope more than expectation. I had said that it would not be the biggest shock in the world if Colebrooke won, but really was only expecting to pick up some place money! But nobody told Colebrooke that - and he put up THE bravest performance to win by the shortest of margins. We knew we had to use a claiming jockey to negate the penalty he incurred for winning at Fontwell, and we were lucky enough to secure the services of Brendan Powell who was just about the best 7lb claimer about - I say 'was' as 2 days before, he rode a double, and his claim was reduced to 5lbs, but luckily that change did not kick in until Sunday! Brendan gave Colebrooke a peach of a ride, and sitting just behind the leaders he travelled and jumped superbly before nipping up the inner as they turned into the straight. From there on in it was all about heart and guts, with Soliwery from the powerful Nicky Henderson stable looming up on the outer, and Alan Kings Fire Fighter tucked in behind our boy had to pull out all the stops to repel all challengers, and he did just that, clinging on by a short head. There was minor interference after the last and the stewards had a good look at it, but we managed to keep the race! Great to be able to have Ben Turner on hand to pick up his prize, he will not have many Saturday Sandown winners - it was a day to remember. Saturday night we were back to the pub and a really good party with friends- I still have a sore head, and I am sure that the other folks in the pub were left in no doubt that Nick Brown Racing had had a winner, and that the logo had been on Channel 4! Great fun, a super day - one of the best I have had in the job, and it is now a bit of fun in a higher grade for Colebrooke who we thought we were struggling with with one penalty!! Cheltenham at the end of the month could be on the cards, as he has come out of the race fine. Saturday had started well, as Montegonian did a sparkling piece of work first lot! He was electric, and seems to have come on leaps and bounds for his first run - he is very very exciting and will have an entry at Kempton on Saturday. If you would like a share in this gorgeous horse ring me on 07909 518902 and come to Kempton as an owner at the weekend! Omaruru did 2 canters and skipped and bucked his way home afterwards, so he is in great form. San Telm and Smart Exit both cantered away, and Kikos went for a ride. A great day Saturday, and with 2 winners already this year things really are going well!! Remember 07909 518902 to join in the fun!
