Thursday 10 October
Grassfinch had a fruitless trip to Ludlow yesterday. It was always touch and go as to whether the ground would be juicy enough for her, but as it had been the target since mid summer it was worth declaring and going and having a walk on it. Stuart found it to be too quick for her, and after consulting the jockeys in the first made the decision to declare her a non runner and come home. Another looking for rain is Smart Exit, who needs a softer surface. He is in great form at home and worked really well at the weekend. He will be entered today for a Novice Handicap chase in Wetherby next Wednesday, but will not run on anything quicker than Good To Soft, so will need some Yorkshire rain!! Back at home - we have for a number of years enjoyed juvenile hurdlers, and have had some good days with them (Omaruru, and Colebrooke). We didn't manage to secure one last year, but were keen to find a suitable candidate this term, and earlier in the week we got one. Maypole Lass will start he hurdling career in the next few weeks, and run in the colours of Ben Turner. Maypole Lass is from Mrs Robesons top flat family, her dam, and unraced half sister to Notnowcato, was highly regarded at Sir Michael Stoutes before an injury curtailed her career. ML has spent a few weeks at Fences farm last year, and Stuart liked her then. She has only had 2 runs on the flat, and Sir Michael thinks that she will be well suited by hurdling. Ben saw her pedigree and liked that, and when he saw her form he decided to take the plunge. She passed the vet earlier in the week, and arrived at Fences Farm shortly afterwards. She has already schooled over hurdles and looks a natural. We have already identified some early season targets, which should be fun if all goes well. If anyone is interested in having a fun Juvenile for the season - the big sales are just around the corner and there will be horses there to suit all budgets!! I have been burning the midnight oil going through them!! Call me if you're interested!! 07909 518902
